Semester at Strathclyde

Going to Strathclyde? Here's what we learnt about applying, course matching, the ETA, money, halls and daily life in Glasgow.

We spent semester 1 at Strathclyde in 2025. Here's what we'd tell a friend going next.

Start here for the essentials, in order: applying through NTU, course matching, getting into the UK, money, halls, food and common questions. We checked prices and dates against the official pages in October 2026. Use the links to check again before you book.

The Travel tab is our record of 24 trips in one semester, 36 places with prices and opening times, and photos from our travels. Glasgow is a convenient base for trips, with several stations near campus.

Apply

You apply through NTU's GEM Explorer (opens in a new tab) on the GEM Mobility Portal (opens in a new tab). You need to have finished two NTU semesters, have a CGPA of 3.3 or above, and not have been on an in-person exchange before. You rank three universities, and NTU allocates places by CGPA band, citizenship, your ranking and how many spots each school has.

  • Strathclyde takes nominations (opens in a new tab) 1 March – 15 May for a September start and 15 September – 15 October for January. NTU sends your nomination. Then keep an eye out for Strath's email.
  • Then you apply to Strath online with your passport, NTU transcript and class choices.

Match courses

Course matching takes some planning. Find past matches in CourseFinder (opens in a new tab), then submit each one in NTU's online course matching system (opens in a new tab) (both need your NTU login).

  • Pick from Strath's exchange class catalogue (opens in a new tab) and check for timetable clashes yourself.
  • Officially Strath allows classes from at most two departments. Ask a coordinator if your choices span more departments. Strath's coordinators know NTU course matching can take time, and may allow an exception when most of your classes are in your primary department. One of us (MAE) had MAE, EEE and DMEM classes approved; the full list is below.
  • Exchange grades count towards your AUs, not your CGPA.

Before you fly

Get a UK ETA (opens in a new tab) before you fly: £20 on GOV.UK or the UK ETA app. It usually comes through within a day, but give it 3 working days. It lasts 2 years.

R Glasgow Cathedral

Settle in

From the airport, take the Airport Express 500 (opens in a new tab). It runs every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, to Buchanan Bus Station, about a 15-minute walk from the halls. Collect your keys at Lord Todd. After you collect your keys, check the free market of cutlery, plates, decor and storage left by past students. Take what you need.

MAE course matches

These are the matches NTU's MAE coordinators approved for us in March and April 2025. Every Strathclyde class below runs in semester 1 (September to December). If you are going in January, look for semester 2 classes in the exchange class catalogue (opens in a new tab). All of them were approved; the first list is the ones we would take again. Approvals change from year to year, so search CourseFinder (opens in a new tab) and get each match approved yourself.

Questions we had

What should I pack?

Scotland is wet, rocky and slippery, and the weather changes all the time. Here's what we were glad we packed:

  • Hiking shoes, or any shoes with a good grip.
  • Uniqlo Heattech (Extra Warm). You'll wear it almost every day.
  • Two or more shopping bags. Every shop charges for plastic bags.
  • Extension cords. UK plugs are the same as Singapore's, so you only need adapters for EU trips.
  • Downloaded shows. Data is patchy in the Highlands and on long journeys.
Are lectures recorded?

Not in our experience. Each lecturer decides, and none of ours were.

Attendance is different for every lecturer (QR code, password or a paper sheet), so attend every class in week 1. Attendance rules were fairly relaxed in our MAE and EEE classes.

When do exam timetables come out?

About five weeks before exams, on Pegasus.

  • Semester 1: first week of November (exams 7–18 Dec in 2026/27).
  • Semester 2: early March (exams 19 Apr – 21 May 2027).

Each timetable stays in draft for a week before it's final (exam timetable FAQs (opens in a new tab)). Book flights home with a flexible fare.

Which hall should I pick?

If you stay in Strath's halls, consider a single-gender flat: we found them more spacious.

  • Thomas Campbell Court: 4-bedroom flats sharing 1 bathroom, £146.16 a week.
  • Birkbeck Court: 6-bedroom flats with 2 bathrooms, £146.16 a week.
  • Andrew Ure, Forbes and Garnett: rooms with a wash basin, £154.56 a week. Handy for washing small things and drying them on the radiator.

Mixed flats have more people. That can be fun, but there's also more chance of a flatmate you don't click with. See exchange accommodation (opens in a new tab).

What does a semester in halls cost?

At 2026/27 prices:

  • Semester 1 let (14 weeks 2 days): about £2,090 for a standard room, £2,210 with a basin.
  • Semester 2 let (21 weeks 5 days): about £3,170, or £3,360 with a basin.

Semester 1 rooms are limited, so apply early through the Accommodation Portal (opens in a new tab).

What should I know about halls?
  • Fire drills every Wednesday, sometimes as early as 8 am.
  • Laundry at Lord Todd is about S$5 a wash and dry. Detergent isn't included; the app may give you a free cycle.
  • Kitchens have a fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and oven, but no air fryer.
  • Cleaners do the shared areas a couple of times a semester.
  • When you check out, clear your room, donate pots and pans in the boxes by the halls, and drop your keys at Lord Todd.
What if something goes wrong?
What's the time difference with Singapore?

Singapore is 8 hours ahead of Glasgow from late October to late March, and 7 hours ahead the rest of the year, when the UK is on summer time.

Lunch in Glasgow is evening in Singapore, a convenient time to call home.

Can I rent privately instead of halls?

You can, but for one semester halls are much simpler, and halls are exempt from council tax.

In a private flat, ask Strath for a student status letter for the council. Whether you get the exemption is the council's decision. See Strath accommodation (opens in a new tab).

How does the student card work?

Most students never need a physical card: once you register, your digital student card (opens in a new tab) is in the Strathclyde app.

If you want a plastic one, ask at the Teaching and Learning Building. It was free when we went.

Is the NHS free for me?

Probably not. NHS Scotland (opens in a new tab) only exempts international students who hold a valid visa and are on a full-time course. On a one-semester exchange you usually enter as a visitor with an ETA, so you can be charged for hospital treatment.

NTU's Group Travel Insurance (opens in a new tab) (Chubb) covers sanctioned exchange travel, so read what it includes before you fly.

Which SIM should I get?
  • Lebara (opens in a new tab) if you'll travel in Europe: 100 GB for £20 per 30 days, with EU roaming included.
  • VOXI (opens in a new tab) (Vodafone) has good eSIM deals, but roaming in Europe needs a pass: £2.60 a day, £15 for 8 days, £20 for 15 days.
  • You can also buy SIM cards at the counter of almost any supermarket.
How much cash do I need?

About £100 for the whole exchange. 95% of places take cards, buses included, and when you split bills with international friends they'll often pay you back in cash anyway.

Open a Monzo (opens in a new tab) account early: Groupon kept rejecting our Singapore cards, and some memberships only take a UK Direct Debit.

What do people do in the evenings?
  • The Stand (opens in a new tab)'s Sunday improv: £1 for students.
  • Concerts, festivals and musicals, often cheaper than in Singapore.
  • Kitty O'Shea's for live music, and Maggie's for line dancing and rodeo nights.
  • On campus: Drag Bingo, Therapets, boxing and spin classes, and Strath Active events like UV badminton.
  • For quieter days: Waterstones and the West End's secondhand bookshops.
